Microsoft has released a hotfix for KB2910552, an issue where Windows ADK 8.1 boot images no longer worked when migrating from Windows XP. Since Configuration Manager 2012 R2 requires Windows ADK 8.1, task sequences that were designed to migrate from XP to Windows 7/8/8.1 were broken in the R2 release.
Prior to the hotfix, you’d see this error in your SMSTS.log:
CreateProcess failed. Code(0x800700C1) TSManager datetime 3048 (0x0BE8)
Command line execution failed (800700C1) TSManager datetime 3048 (0x0BE8)
Failed to install boot image.
is not a valid Win32 application. (Error: 800700C1; Source: Windows) TSManager datetime 3048 (0x0BE8)
To apply this fix, install this hotfix to your CAS and primary sites, then update all boot images on your distribution points.
What about WINPE 4.0 and 5.0 boot images?
John I updated my post to include information on the legacy boot images. Only ADK 8.0 generated images and earlier will support XP migrations. Boot images based on ADK 8.1 will have issues.

Information on generating older boot images can be found here:

John, we have posted some additional information regarding the hotfix on our site. The main thing is that you want to have an updated client agent with the hotfix, to ensure that the boot image can be staged.
